Yesterday evening, I didn't stitch. Though, it's something I do almost every evening. But yesterday, I didn't stitch. I just sat on the couch and switch on the TV on Arte Channel.

For someone like me who pay interest in Ireland, it wasn't impossible to ignore this Paul Greengrass movie (award in Berlin in 2002).
This movie which looks like a documentary, directed camera on shoulder, tells the point of view of the 2 parts (Brits and Irish) and pluges us in the horror of this bloody Sunday.

For young people or those who don't care about Ireland, it should be recalled that Bloody Sunday is not only a U2 song. It's also a tragic episode in the Irish history. In this Sunday January 30, 1972 during a peaceful march in the Bogside (catholic area) of Derry (Northern Ireland), the British Army opened fire killing 13 civils and wounding 14 others...

I went to Derry in July 2004. I saw the Bogside, the places where this drama took place, the mural frescos pointing out the confrontations and deaths. Believe me, it brings cold in the back to stand on the ramparts of the old Derry overhung with barbed wires and supervised by cameras (only on the catholic side). And on the other side, streets with pavements decorated with the Union Jack's colours. The orangists processions took place a few days before and the place of fire were still there... (If you want to see some pictures, you can go there).

This is why I didn't stitch yesterday evening. Because such films stir up you so much that you want to say: never again!
Hello Sylvie,
thanks for visiting and commenting my blog :-)
Dear hubby and me saw bloody sunday as well. DH is half Irish. And as you said it wasn't a fun movie but it was worth seeing. That's one of the really bad things that had happened in the past and shouldn't be forgotten....
